In 1958, the first integrated circuit was built by Jack S. Kilby. The circuit was made of a number of individual silicon elements assembled together. The concept provided the foundation for the integrated-circuit silicon chip, which allowed great advances in microelectronic technology. Also this year, came the development of a programming language, called LISP (List Processor), to allow research in artificial intelligence (AI).
